Effective water management is crucial for the sustainable operation of reservoirs and dams. However, traditional methods often present challenges that can lead to inefficiencies, excessive water discharge, and safety risks for operators. In a recent project at a Texas dam with a 1,350-acre reservoir, Sofis, in collaboration with their partner Advanced Rupture Disk Technology, successfully implemented the FlexiDrive remote valve operation system. This innovative solution significantly improved operational control, efficiency, and safety.
Addressing the need for precision and safety
Before the implementation of FlexiDrive, water release at the dam was an all-or-nothing process. The entire dam had to be opened, leading to uncontrolled and excessive water discharge. Additionally, manual valve operation posed serious risks, requiring operators to climb over fencing and across walls to access the valve, creating a hazardous working environment with a high potential for falls and injury. The challenge was clear: the contractor needed a safe, efficient, and precise way to control water release without fully opening the dam.
The Sofis FlexiDrive solution
After assessing the site’s needs, Sofis engineers installed two FlexiDrive systems, providing an optimal remote valve operation solution. The system allowed operators to adjust the valve from a safe, easily accessible platform, eliminating the need to physically access dangerous areas.
Key benefits of the FlexiDrive implementation
- Controlled water release: The FlexiDrive enabled incremental valve adjustments, allowing smaller, measured discharges instead of opening the entire dam. This resulted in better water management and reduced waste.
- Remote operation for enhanced operator safety: Operators could now control valves from a secure location, minimizing exposure to hazardous conditions and ensuring safer working environments.
- Adaptability over long distances: The FlexiDrive system effectively transmitted torque over extended distances, making it ideal for the dam’s layout where direct manual access was impractical.
- Increased efficiency and reliability: By eliminating the need for manual operation in risky areas, FlexiDrive enhanced both worker safety and operational reliability, reducing downtime and maintenance challenges.
A smarter approach to water management
With the help of Advanced Rupture Disk Technology, Sofis successfully installed the FlexiDrive system, delivering a long-term, reliable solution for water flow control at the dam. This seamless integration improved operational efficiency and demonstrated the value of remote valve operation in optimizing water management infrastructure. The success of this project highlights the transformative potential of the Sofis FlexiDrive in infrastructure applications. Whether for dams, refineries, or industrial plants, the ability to remotely operate valves with precision and safety makes the FlexiDrive an essential tool for modern facility management.
